Issues in Educational Technology

                                                                                                                  By Francesca Duffy

1.  A summary of the article highlighting main ideas
This article is about Journey School in Aliso Viejo, Calif. which doesn’t teach the students how to use technology until the students enter the 6thgrade. However, they teach their students about “Cyber Civic” program to let them know about safe and roper online behavior. Through the Cyber Civics program, there has not been any cyber-bullying and sexting. The most important for them to teach their students is what is the appropriate use of these resources.

2.  3 discussion questions to get other teachers discussing the article
*What are other advantages of teaching Cyber Civics program?
*Isn’t it late to learn from 6th grade since nowadays everyone easily gets opportunities to use technology?
*How do you define the word “digital citizenship”?

3.  A personal reflection

Although I put the discussion question #3 that it is late to learn from 6th grade since nowadays everyone easily gets opportunities to use technology, I think the way Journey School teaches their students is great because I don’t think it is really necessary to learn how to use technology for the younger kids.
At these grade levels, I think they just need to focus on learning basic stuff and play outside to keep them healthy.

Also, “Cyber Civics” program is helpful for the students to be more responsible when they use the technology and internet. As they learn about it step by step through 6th to 8th grades, I believe they will be learning to be more responsible and safe, and how to use information properly. Moreover, they will learn better online manner so that they will make the online society better.
